Hurricane Season: Preventing and Repairing Roof Damage

Hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is calling for 10 to 16 named storms, including both tropical storms and hurricanes, in 2016. Some of these storms could make their way up to Connecticut.

How a Hurricane Can Affect Your Home

A hurricane can cause significant damage to homes. One of the parts of a house that is most commonly affected by a hurricane is the roof.

The strong winds associated with a hurricane can tear shingles off a roof, allowing water to get into the attic and to leak into other parts of the house. Wind can also blow debris, such as tree limbs or shingles that were torn off nearby houses. This debris can cause damage to a roof.

Heavy rain can leak into a house if shingles are blown off or if the roof was not installed properly or had prior problems. Existing roof leaks that were not repaired can get much worse in the wake of a hurricane.

Get Your Roof Inspected and Make Repairs before a Hurricane Strikes

If your house has any roof damage that you are aware of, you should have it repaired as soon as possible. It might not seem like a big deal now, but a major storm could make it much worse. If it has been more than a year since you had your roof checked for signs of damage or wear, you should schedule a roof inspection.

Have Your Roof Inspected after a Hurricane

If your roof gets damaged by a hurricane, you should have a contractor inspect it. A roofing expert will look for loose or missing shingles, holes, leaks in the attic, and other signs of damage caused by the storm. Your homeowners insurance should cover the cost of repairs associated with a hurricane.
